Mufushan Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section of Mufushan Formation is located at highway side on Mufushan Hill, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province (118°46’E, 32°07’ N), about 8 km north of the seat of Nanjing City. The section is measured by Yu et al. in 1962. It is the lower part of the same section shared by the overlying Paotaishan Formation. In the type section, the Mufushan Formation is 137.12 m thick. The formation was named by Yu et al. (1962). The name is derived from Mufushan Hill in the north of Nanjing City, southwestern Jiangsu Province.

Lithology and Thickness
The Mufushan Formation is a carbonate (dolomite) sequence. The formation can be divided into two lithological parts: Lower part is dominated by greyish white dolomitic limestone with chert bands or nodules, followed by greyish black, thin-bedded phosphoric dolomitic limestone, intercalated with calcareous shale and light purplish red dolomitic limestone. Upper part is dominated by greyish white to greyish brown, thin-bedded dolomite, followed by greyish black, thin-bedded limestone, dolomitic limestone, and purplish red argillaceous limestone.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Mufushan Fm is in conformable contact with the underlying Hetang Fm. The lower boundary of the formation is defined by disappearance of underlying greyish brown platy-bedded shale of the Hetang Fm
Upper contact
The Mufushan Fm is in conformable contact with the overlying Paotaishan Fm. The upper boundary is defined by the appearance of yellow, thin-bedded argillaceous limestone at the base of overlying Paotaishan Fm.
Regional extent
The Mufushan Formation is exposed in the Yangtze Area of South China Region, including the Nanjing-Zhenjiang Hills in southwestern Jiangsu Province (Nanjing City and Jurong County of Zhenjiang City), and Chaohu City, southern Anhui Province. It is also known under the surface, by drill hole, in Kunshan, southern Jiangsu Province. Thickness of the formation is about 50‒137 m in the area of Nanjing-Zhenjiang Hills, and about 160 m in the drill hole in Kunshan.
